Google+ for SEO

For years I advocated against the organization-wide use of Google+ for SEO and I was right! Google+ is an incredibly strong feature for indexing content (organic keyword listing) that Google has provided us, but it requires a basic understanding of how it works. Simply asking your team to Google+ every time they discover a new flavor of coffee as starbucks has practically zero value for your seo rankings (that is of course, keywords that drive conversions).

Google+ is designed with one basic goal in mind. Give credit to an author. With the flood of content on the internet it’s difficult for Google’s Search Robots to apply a distinction between original and syndicated content. In order for Google to combat this issue, they applied a unique identifier to each article which is essentially the same way that any sort of attribution works (dedicated IP address, User Name, Cookied User, etc.). The unique identifier is the Google+ account, because it make an association between four unique data points, which include:

1.       Content
2.       Keywords
3.       Author
4.       Website

One additional point – The Google+ account needs to be connected to your website domain via the Google Webmaster tools. Google will associate any content published via the Google+ Author (example: alex@marketingfox.net) and the associated Web Domain (www.marketingfox.net) by default, subsequently indexing the content.
